Friday night my UPS friends and I crowded around our living room TV to watch the hour-long charity special, Stand Up To Cancer. Since my relationship with TV events remains slightly dissociated, I was the probably the last one to know it was airing that night. Regardless, I was glad to stick around for the first half-hour of the program. In those 30-minutes I was revivified by a Hollywood culture I had never really had much faith in.
As a person who has always been moved by music, I really appreciated the tribute song "Just Stand Up!" produced by Babyface and LA Reid and interpreted by 12 of music's most influential, talented, and powerful living female vocalists. It's truly amazing to see and hear something of that caliber performed for such a meaningful cause. Seriously, in what other situation would something of that magnitude and MONEY be possible? It's sobering that something as terrible and deadly as cancer had to the curator.
I would urge everyone to donate to the cause. I have. Even if you've never been directly affected by cancer, it's inevitable that you know someone who has. In the last 6 years three of my very close personal friends' mothers have battled with cancer. Despite them being good, trustworthy, inspiring people, they weren't able to escape cancer affecting in their lives in devastating ways.
I was so moved by the SU2C effort that I wanted to hunt down the people responsible for organizing this event. I was surprised (but also not) to find that they were mostly women:
The SU2C leadership team includes news anchor Katie Couric; the Entertainment Industry Foundation, represented by Board of Directors Chairperson Sherry Lansing and CEO Lisa Paulsen; Laura Ziskin; the Noreen Fraser Foundation and its executives Noreen Fraser, Woody Fraser, Rusty Robertson and Sue Schwartz; and nonprofit executive Ellen Ziffren.

I really hope this is the effort that finally brings us to the light at the end of the tunnel.
Go purchase that iTunes single and Stand Up To Cancer.
