I got recruited, interviewed, and offered a job to work for a big data startup in San Mateo as a Hadoop Support Engineer. I don't know the first thing about Hadoop, but apparently that was a risk they were willing to take. Even though the money was good and remote work options strong, I ultimately turned it down.
The timing coincided with a conference I was attending around web performance. In the few days at the conference I was inspired to stay in the field and master performance. Remember to keep this perspective when the going gets tough, Julie.
